About Miami Correctional Facility:

Miami Correctional Facility is located on the former Grissom Air Force Base, on the southeast corner of the Grissom Aeroplex, just south of Peru, Indiana, in Miami County. This facility is classified as a medium/high maximum security correction facility, housing a maximum of 3,188 offenders. At the DOC, we promote public safety by providing meaningful, effective opportunities for successful re-entry. As the model of best correctional practices, we strive to return productive citizens to our communities and inspire a culture of accountability, integrity and professionalism.

Salary Information:

This role starts at a base salary of $25,766.

About the Job:

As an Accountant, you will be responsible for maintaining financial records and accounts for a state agency.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Post transactions to appropriate ledgers and accounts.
  • Verify accuracy of all financial documents and records.
  • Reconcile accounts and subsidiary ledgers with the general ledger.
  • Prepare, correct, and adjust entries prior to closing accounts.
  • Prepare periodic financial reports such as balance sheets and income statements.
  • Ensure availability of funds before authorizing payment or submitting vouchers for payment to the State Auditor s Office for approval.
  • Prepare, edit, and verify electronic data processing entries and documents.
  • Recommend changes in accounting policies and assist in developing accounting procedures.
  • Direct the work of one (1) to three (3) account clerks.

What We're Looking For:

  • Specialized knowledge of the theories, principles and procedures of public accounting.
  • Working knowledge of the federal and state laws, procedures, practices and policies of governmental accounting and bookkeeping.
  • Working knowledge of automated accounting systems.
  • Effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to solve standard accounting problems.
  • Ability to accurately perform arithmetic calculations.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Working knowledge of agency function and organization.
  • Ability to evaluate and recommend modifications to existing accounting methods and procedures.
  • Ability to supervise, delegate and coordinate activities of others.
  • Ability to prepare clear, accurate and concise reports.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may serve as a team lead for an assigned work group.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
